Description
One of the sliding doors of an abandoned herring smokehouse which provided entry for the stacking of firewood used to smoke herring in the early 1950's in Trescott, Maine. Once lit fires would be control dampened with sawdust to provide the desired curing of the fish which were strung on hanging sticks above.
These doors and smaller sliding doors above were systematically opened and closed (vented) to varying degrees to facilitate correct smoke and temperatures during processing.
