Description
The retired and spirited mare galloping toward me still displays a past vitality and workhorse stature its lifelong work companion having long passed on.
These hard working animals were once the backbone relied upon for dependable labor.They plowed fields and hauled felled trees as a team from the farmers woodlands.
Although replaced by tractors and mechanization this one remaining workhorse is still watchfully and lovingly cared for. Rather than existing alone in an empty barn the farmer on this farm has provided the companionship of a dairy cow to ward off the mare's otherwise lonely existence.
There's an underlying sense of resourcefulness and down east Maine survival evident within this scene, notice the antlered deer skulls hanging inside the barn, keepsakes from years of deer hunts past and existence in his remote location.
