Description
The "Michael Eileen" passing thru Johnson Bay in Lubec, Maine.
Once common from the 1920's thru the late 1950's along the coastal Bay of Fundy/Gulf of Maine, this surviving sardine carrier "Michael Eileen" out of Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada, exemplifies that heyday of prosperous commercial fishing.
From stationary fish traps called weirs, these boats loaded their holds with upwards of 125,000 pounds of fish and could then run - fully loaded - at up to 12 knots carrying herring to coastal sardine canneries for processing.
