Description
West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, a beacon in the night looks out thru the fog into the Bay of Fundy/Gulf of Maine where extreme tides, treacherous currents and precarious rock outcrops are a constant threat to shipping.
Located at the easternmost peninsula on the United States mainland, Quoddy Head State Park, Lubec, Maine.
The lighthouse was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson and first built in 1808. The present tower structure built in1858 was staffed by resident lightkeepers until 1988 when the U.S. Coast Guard automated the light.
Many additional renditions of this West Quoddy Head Lighthouse can be seen here in an extensive portfolio of coastal Down East Maine.
