Description
One of the venting doors of an abandoned herring smokehouse where burning firewood was used to smoke herring in the early 1950's in Trescott, Maine.
The lit fires would be control dampened with sawdust to provide the desired curing of the fish which were strung on hanging sticks above. These shutter doors and larger sliding doors would be systematically opened and closed (vented) to varying degrees to facilitate correct smoke and temperatures during processing the hanging herring product.
