Downtime for snow covered lobster traps stacked up ready to be set out in the spring for another season of harvesting lobster.
Lobster boats are allowed up to 800 traps (also referred to as pots) to fish throughout the year. Traps are pulled up for lobsters and rebaited usually every 2 to 3 days.
Not all lobstermen set traps during wintry months due to lobsters moving further offshore resulting in less overall catch.
Even though higher winter catch prices are paid due to less supply it's not always worth the additional effort braving the rougher seas, colder air and icy decks making it much more dangerous endeavor.
