Description
Late autumn countryside view of low bush wild blueberry barren that border distant forest woodlands of Washington County, Maine.
The preparation of wild blueberry lands can involve years of laborious land clearing. Growers must remove huge glacial boulders from the landscape clearing the way for prosperous plant growth. Once unearthed the rock is often used for periphery land boundaries.
Low bush blueberries are naturally suited to acidic, low-fertility soils and cold, harsh winters. Once lands are cleared wild blueberries are a low-input crop requiring minimal management.
The berries are grown on a two-year cycle. Each year, half of a grower's land is managed to encourage vegetative growth and the other half is prepared for harvest.
