Description
Within seconds of being fed by the adult, each Robin nestling engages in a very specific behavior. This behavior is natures way of providing nest sanitation with the added deterrent of keeping predators away who might smell and discover the nest.
Upon feeding, the young birds immediately raises their posterior in the air and produce a fecal sac containing the waste product from its diet of insects, worms, berries and other grubs that pass through its developing system quickly.
The adult then quickly removes the sac (shown here) and either consumes it or take it away to a distant location.
The sac can still contain leftover nourishment the adults benefit from throughout their up to 75 or so daily hectic round trip food quests for three hungry mouths.
This repetitive behavior continues thru the day the juveniles finally fledge the nest.
This is a continuation from my month long documentation series of the incubation, nesting and nurturing of three new born Robin juveniles and the male and female parenting that transpired from June 12th thru July 9th, 2017.
It has been a very interesting and educational experience I would never have known about had I not been fortunate enough to have it unfold in my own backyard.
I've enjoyed the many comments and sharing my images with those interested.
