Description
The customary comforting melodic sound of a frequent blasting foghorn at this location and many others lighthouses in Maine is now a thing of the past Now the foghorn can only be triggered via a voluntary radio frequency from approaching ships wishing to hear the blast to aid their navigation thru the dangerous waters..
The penetrating beam of light from the lighthouse beacon gets eaten up and diminished quickly in a heavy down east Maine coastal fog. At West Quoddy Head Lighthouse this is a frequent occurrence throughout the year especially during the milder seasons.
Quoddy Head State Park is located at the easternmost peninsula on the United States mainland in Lubec, Maine.
