Description
What caught my eye in this landscape still life taken in Machias, Maine was the mix of scattered colors which resembled an intricate tapestry.
In Maine, wild blueberries are mostly harvested in late August throughout the blueberry barrens of the state's rural Down East region.
Each year in August, Machias hosts a three day Wild Blueberry Festival which draws many tourists and vendors from all around the country.
The state has some 44,000 acres of wild blueberries and relies on the berries for about $250 million per year in economic value.Maine is the biggest producer of wild blueberries in the country.
Here in a lonely, wild country a smoothly rolling carpet of blueberry plants, rhodora, teaberry and bracken covers the ground. Only an occasional lonely pine or glowering gray glacial boulder breaks the horizon line. On a June day the fragrance of new blossoms, in August sweet smell of ripening berries and sun-warmed laurel is almost overwhelming.
