Description
Once common from the 1920's thru the late 1950's along the coastal Bay of Fundy/Gulf of Maine, this surviving herring carrier "Capelco" out of Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada, exemplifies that heyday of prosperous commercial fishing as it passes thru Johnson Bay in a heavy fog, Lubec, Maine..
From stationary fish traps called weirs, these boats loaded their holds with upwards of 125,000 pounds of fish and could then run - fully loaded - at up to 12 knots carrying herring to coastal sardine canneries for processing.
This image is part of an ongoing series portraying the fishing boats of Down East Maine by Marty Saccone.
