Description
Stonington is one of the most picturesque fishing communities along the Maine coastline.
Any direction you look a vast colorful mosaic of moored lobster boats fills your view. A fleet of approximately 300 privately owned boats of all sizes compete for available mooring spaces throughout the harbor.
In this early morning scenic the fog lingers as day begins for the fishermen.
The lobster boat "Clueless" heads out loaded up with a stack of lobster traps that will be baited up then systematically dropped to the ocean floor.
In the foreground the lobster boats "Aliyah Brooke" (near) and "Tied Together" lie at mooring their reflections rippling on the tranquil water. This harbor is one of the most scenic ports in down east coastal Maine.
Up to max of 800 traps are fished by many of the Stonington boats,...multiply that by the number of boats and the catch quantity adds up quickly.
The waters throughout this location are among the most lobster productive in Maine.
Stonington's yearly robust lobster harvest has produced up to 60 million dollars of catch in this fluctuating market,...that's about 25 million pounds of lobster,...not to shabby a catch considering its the most productive lobster port in Maine.
